what's wrong with the boot on the right? the material looks strange

Left (I believe) is a discontinued pascal Dr. Martens, right is Solovair derby. I am trying to find something similar to the left one: more streamlined, wraps naturally around the foot whereas the right one expands outwards and looks like a clumpy boat.

Got these boots a week ago and have them broken in. what should I use to keep them clean/extend life? I work in pretty dry conditions if that helps
