These surplus boots I bought have an extra eyelet on the inside flap of both boots. Canâ€™t find any explanation of what theyâ€™re for. Thoughts?

I use my timberland everyday since 1 year now for everything from going to the groceries to doing some hikes in Iceland and Tanzania. But they are eroding now, is there something I can do to prevent this ? I canâ€™t found any informations on this topic
